How to Tell Real ID From Fake ID

There are some basic things you can do to make sure the ID you’re using is real.

Look at the holograms

A real ID has raised, separate holograms that appear when you move the card back and forth. Fake IDs often use lower quality holograms that aren’t raised or separate, which makes them harder to identify. Check the edges

When you’re checking IDs for authenticity, bartenders will usually bend them and examine the edges to see if they’re smooth and straight. This isn’t a skill that many people think about, but it can be a great way to spot a fake ID.

If you’re checking the ID’s edges, it is a good idea to have something to hold on to to help you inspect the edges more closely. If the edges are rough, have different thicknesses or be very flimsy and come apart easily, it is likely that the ID is not made from proper card stock.

Lastly, it is a good idea to examine the laminate that covers most of the ID’s surface. If the laminate on the ID is not stuck to the plastic, it is a clear sign that it isn’t a real ID.
