An Introduction to Online Gambling

In the past decade, online gambling has become an increasingly popular way of gambling in the U.S. Gambling as a business has grown in recent years and hundreds of new gambling sites have emerged. There are many debates as to whether online gambling should be regulated or not. Some states have taken action to ban online gambling, but the majority of states allow online gambling. That is not to say all online gambling is illegal; but the laws regarding online gambling are different than offline gambling.

The U.S. supreme court has held that there is no such thing as a legalized sports betting or online gambling. Therefore, it has declined to review an Oregon case that the supreme court had declined to hear regarding that state's law allowing online gambling websites. State governments typically regulate and license those online gambling websites and make sure you always have a place to turn when something goes wrong. Plus, a large portion of the revenue that online gambling websites make is typically paid in taxes and designated for other important things such as education and major infrastructure projects.

So why does the UK gambling commission feel that it is necessary to regulate online gambling? They argue that because there are already too many online gambling websites operating in the U.K., it is likely that the online gambling industry will experience an increase. Therefore, it is necessary for the commission to protect the consumer from the online gambling site operators who may not be very reputable. In their main article "Regulating Online Gambling in the U.K," the U.K gambling commission outlines several reasons why they feel it is necessary to regulate online gambling. In particular, the commission argues that it is not the state's responsibility to protect online gamblers because they are not conducting business in the traditional way in which state agencies would typically do so. In their main article, they also point out that it is the consumer's responsibility to investigate the online gambling site which they have chosen and to determine whether it is a legitimate business.

In terms of regulating online poker games and online gambling, the UK government and its anti-gambling bodies are not actually trying to control or limit how much money can be won through online gambling. The main thing they are trying to do is make sure that all money betting and gambling takes place within the confines of a fair and orderly game of poker. The idea behind online poker and casino regulation is to ensure that everyone who plays online poker and casino games is playing in an honest and reputable manner and that the odds of getting a negative outcome are reduced as much as possible. Unfortunately, the majority of online gambling websites are based offshore with little to no local presence. Consequently, it is very easy for someone in another country to gamble on your behalf. Although the UK government has taken an active role in regulating online gambling in the UK, other countries around the world have taken a much more hands-off approach to online gambling. Some countries have even made online gambling illegal and punishable by imprisonment. The threat of prison for online gambling is only a scare tactic and does not actually exist. There are however, various acts which may be considered as attempts to regulate online gambling and some countries have actually implemented these acts in order to protect their citizens from online gaming sites which are based overseas.

Despite this lack of action on the part of international governments, online gambling and online gaming will continue to grow into a multi-billion dollar industry in the future. As time goes by, it is anticipated that online gambling will overtake traditional forms of gambling such as land-based casinos and horse racing. There is currently no evidence that shows that there is a decline in the growth of online gambling over the past few years and if anything, the opposite is true. Online gambling is continuing to grow and flourish and is projected to soon be the leader of the online gambling industry.
